Grand Canyon Field Institute (GCFI) Classes

What Your Class Fee Includes
Your class fee includes expert instruction by leading Grand Canyon scientists, authors, researchers, historians, and naturalists; NPS approved educational materials published by Grand Canyon Association; backpacking and camping permits; free camping immediately before/after class (where applicable); and an educational park entrance fee waiver. Select classes may include meals, lodging, gear, and mule pack service where indicated.

Assessing Your Level of Fitness
GCFI designs all of their classes to highlight the beauty, drama, and interpretive themes of Grand Canyon. The physical demands of each class are as varied as the topics you explore. Whether you are joining GCFI for a single day rim class or a weeklong backpack in the canyon, it is imperative that you honestly asses your ability to accomplish the physical tasks required. The following scale is provided to help you choose the appropriate class. Each class has been assigned a Hike Level (HL) designation that corresponds to one of the following categories:

Level 1 - Walks on level terrain
Level 2 - Short day hikes into the canyon or long walks along the rim
Level 3 - Slower paced backpacks to established campgrounds on developed trails
Level 4 - Aggressive backpacks on rough, often unmaintained trails
Level 5 - Lengthy backpacks in remote regions over rough, steep terrains on unmaintained trails
Level 6 - 10 - Lengthy backpacks in off trail terrain requiring occasional rock climbing and precautionary belays

Registration and Refunds
Registrations can be made online or by calling toll free number 866-471-4435. Members of the Grand Canyon Association receive a $25 discount on most classes. (You may join when registering for any class and receive your discount immediately.) All participants must be eighteen years old (except the Family courses) and complete a confidential Health Questionnaire to help determine the most suitable class in terms of a person's experience and fitness level. Full payment is due at the time of registration. A refund of your payment less a $65 administrative fee (per person) will be issued if you cancel more than thirty days prior to class. No refunds are allowed if notification is received within thirty days of your class start date. The refund policy for classes using outside outfitters may differ; please inquire.
